Comments

The hosts (Lam Tze-Chung, Tsang Bao-Yi, Cheung Kar-Fai):

Quite good actually considering that they are first-timers. The veteran among the trio should be Tsang Bao-Yi who is Eric Tsang’s daughter. This is the first time that I saw her host a show in Cantonese because all of the shows that I saw her were in Mandarin. The funniest host, however, should be Cheung Kar-Fai. His deadpan expressions and line delivery were so ROTFL. I also liked the banter between the trio, especially the funny criticisms by Tze-Chung and Bao-Yi of Kar-Fai.

The performances:

They were 3, if I remembered correctly. All of them were good. The best one should be the first performance by ALIVE (the project band formed by Daniel Wu, Terence Yin, Andrew Lin and Lam Chi-Chung aka The Four Heavenly Kings) with some of the HK musicians/bands like Audiophile, Beyond, etc. There were four singers from those bands and each member of ALIVE accompanied each singer holding a stack of cards that described the state of HK music and film industry (criticism actually). It’s kind of refreshing to watch it at a Film awards show.

The other 2 were Zhang Liang Ying (theme song of The Banquet) and Jay Chou (theme song for Curse of the Golden Flower).

The presenters:

Ehm…some of them were so boring and lack of chemistry. What about the Korean presenters (Kwon Sang-Woo and Song Hye-Gyo)? ehm. Standard stuff. Didn’t actually crack a joke or anything duh! They should ditch the Chinese presenters. I know HK is under China but this is HK awards, they should find more HK actors/actresses. They have more chemistry and less serious in delivering their banters. The Chinese presenters were so lack of chemistry that it seems they took it too seriously to present the awards. Good presenters should lighten up the atmosphere before presenting. To be fair, some of the HK presenters were lacking too but at least they know how to say a joke or two to draw some laughter from the audience.

The award winners:

Most of them were saying standard things. The most memorable should be when Lau Cheng-Wan won his award. Everyone was so genuinely happy for him - even the hosts and Wong Chau-Sang who was backstage actually came back onstage to give him a hug! His wife, Amy Kwok Oi-Ming was in teary eyes. Even though I initially thought Aaron Kwok would take the award, I was also very happy that Cheng-Wan took it. He has been turning solid works in each of his films - well, the ones that I’ve watched and he has waited 11 years for this award.

Sir Run Run Shaw to be Honoured in his Centennial Year

The 26th Hong Kong Film Awards will be taking place on 15th April with many guests such as Korean stars Kwon Sang Woo and Song Hye Kyo who will be presenting the awards for the Best Asian Film. Reports also suggest that a special award for ‘Achievement in Film of the Century’ will be presented to Sir Run Run Shaw.

The HKFA president Manfred Wong indicated that in addition to the 19 regular awards, there will be two special awards this year. The award for ‘Professional Spirit’ will be presented to long-serving and well known make-up artist ‘Sis Chun’, who has given countless artistes a special confidence in front of the camera with her work. The second special award is for Achievement in Film over the century and this will be presented to Sir Run Run, who turns 100 years old this year. Sir Run Run’s life has been like a living history of the Chinese film industry and HKFA is honoured to present him with this award, which will be collected by Sir Run Run’s son on the night.

Wong also indicates that Quentin Tarantino has announced a re-make of Shaw Brothers classic “One Armed Swordsman” and this has raised focus. People from the industry indicate that since the activities held to mark the first anniversary of the Shaw Bros Fan Club at the beginning of the year, the media has started a series of activities to mark their respect for Sir Run Run.

Guest performers have been confirmed for the awards show that include Jay Chow, Eason Chan and Daniel Wu. The show will be hosted by Nick Cheung, Lam Tze-Chung and Bowie Tsang. Mainland stars Huang Xiaoming and Liu Yifei are also planned to present an award, but Liu is yet to confirm.

Still Life out of running for the 26th HK Film Awards

February 12, 2007

Golden Lion-winning film “Still Life” saw its bid for the Hong Kong Film Awards run out of steam two months before the unveiling of the result.

The Hong Kong Film Awards Association announced on Wednesday that the film has been removed from the list of nominees, due to technical problems.

Its place will be taken by Singaporean film “I Not Stupid 2″.

Shot using Hi-vision Digital Vidicon and DV, the film was digitally copied on 35-mm reels. However, such media could not reach the standards of the Hong Kong Film Awards body.

Directed by Chinese young director Jia Zhangke, “Still Life” was awarded the Golden Lion for Best Film at the 63rd Venice Film Festival.

The upcoming Hong Kong Film Awards Ceremony, the 26th of its kind, will be held on April 15th.

IMO, it is unfair to the people behind Still Life because in another news report that I read, the director, Jia Zhang-Ke, was not informed that his movie was being submitted for nominations. Worse still, he was not informed that his film was removed from the nominees list! Jeez…if he was informed of the submission in the first place, he would have changed it to the correct viewing format.

My Comments:

I guess it is the battle between Curse of the Golden Flower and After This Our Exile. I’m more in favor of the latter.

Patrick Tam actually were nominated in many categories - Director, Screenplay (joint nomination), Editing and Art Direction (joint nomination)!

I couldn’t understand why Jay Chou can be nominated for Supporting Actor ?! O_O.

Why are the judges nominating a baby in Rob-B-Hood? Goodness gracious.

Why is Edison Chen not nominated for Dog Bite Dog ? I thought he’s pretty good (and violent) in that film.

Curse of the Golden Flower is missing on Editing and Screenplay - may be important, especially Screenplay.

I think HKFAA should just ditch the idea of nominated the same person for 2 different films. They should take after the Academy Awards whereby only 1 person can be nominated in one category. I’m referring to the Best Director nominees - Johnnie To for 2 films. Yes, I know sometimes a director can have 2 outstanding films but they have to choose the best one. It is the same situation as this year’s Oscars for Clint Eastwood. Both Flags of the Father and Letters from Iwo Jima were outstanding films but he was nominated for Letters.
